Welcome to Risley Independent Methodist Church
Welcome to our website – here you can find information about our church, its history and its work in the community.
Our Latest News
Our Christmas Services
As always, we have a packed schedule of services over the Christmas period and you are guaranteed a warm welcome at all of them! Details of dates and times are shown in the picture below. It’s worth adding also that refreshments will be served after the Candlelit Carol Service on the 21st.

Christmas Fayre
On Saturday 29th November we will be holding our Christmas Fayre – with festive food, drink, music and all the usual stalls. We hope you can join us and it would be lovely to see you.

Hidden Marvels
Many churches have decorations that embellish the buildings and perhaps encourage the visitor to contemplate some of the Christian story through those decorations. Our church is no exception and in the latest piece to be added to our Eye Witness section you can read an account of some of the beautiful little works that often go ignored or are forgotten about in our chapel. You can read all about them here.

Windows
In 2024 we replaced almost all of the windows in our church buildings. They’ve been a brilliant addition, making the church brighter, lighter and warmer. Our Edwardian stained glass – over a hundred years old – has been replaced and the new version looks fantastic, positively glowing. Anyway, the company that installed the windows – Irlam Glass – has produced a short video showing the incredible work they do so you can watch it here. We hope you enjoy it.
Harvest Festival Pictures
On Sunday 5th October we held our Harvest Festival celebrations as a way of remembering God’s goodness and provision towards us, honouring the beauty and wonder of His creation. Here are some photos of the church, splendidly decorated by members of our congregation, we hope you enjoy them.

Bible Study – ready for debate?
On Tuesday 7th October we will be starting our new round of Bible Studies. Rather than looking at one section of the Bible over a series of weeks, this time around we are examining a number of standalone topics. The session will be every Tuesday evening at 7:30-9:00 and refreshments will also be served. Paul Wheeler from the Stockton Heath Christian Christian Fellowship will be leading us through the following subjects:
- 7th October – Creation vs Evolution
- 14th October – The Second Coming of Jesus
- 21st October – The Role of Women in the Church
- 28th October – How relevant is the Old Testament to Christians today?
- 4th November – The Christian response to homosexuality
11th November – How important is waster Baptism?
Harvest Festival Services
On Sunday 5th October we will celebrate our Harvest Festival with two services. In the morning at 10:45 Philip Gleave will lead us in worship and in the evening at 6:00, James Tobiasen will be in the pulpit. Refreshments will be served after the evening service. We invite all to join us for these wonderful celebrations and we would be very grateful for any gifts of food and produce – especially tinned and long-life food and drink which we will pass on to the Warrington Foodbank.
The church will be open on Saturday 4th from around 10:30am so that people can bring in harvest gifts or help to decorate the church (or both) in preparation for the Sunday services.

MacMillan Coffee Morning
On Thursday 18th September we will be holding our annual fund-raising event in support of Macmillan Cancer Support. It will run from 11:00am until 1:00pm and there will be tea, coffee, a huge array of refreshments, cakes to buy and a bring & buy stall. All monies raised will be donated directly to Macmillan so please come along and support this fantastic charity.
If you’d like to make a donation but can’t make it on the day, you can do that by following the link here.

PCSO Surgery
Our local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) will be holding an occasional surgery at our church. The idea is to allow any member of the public who needs support from the police to come and discuss their concerns directly with the officer – and of course this will be in private and in complete confidence. There is no set pattern of dates when this will happen but when the PCSO does hold a surgery, it will always be on a Thursday at the same time as our Coffee Morning (i.e. 10:00am-12:00noon). But rather than us explaining it to you, here are the words of the man himself, PCSO Neil Potter.
Hello everyone. I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is PCSO 23561 Neil Potter and I am the PCSO for Poulton North. I have started holding the odd surgery at the church where people can come and chat about any issues they may need help with. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my role, it is difficult to give dates with anything less than a week’s notice so I would like to ask those that can if they would kindly follow ‘Warrington North Police’ on Facebook where you can get regular updates on what I am up to and also dates, times and locations for my weekly surgery. I look forward to meeting you.

Bible Study Course
On Tuesday 13th May we will be starting our new course of Bible Study, this time on the book of Romans. This amazing New Testament book gets right to the heart of the Christian message and we are really looking forward to exploring it in depth over the next couple of months. It is a ten week course but there is no need to attend each and every session, people can pop in and out as they wish but of course there will be great benefit in seeing the full picture from start to finish. The course is supplied by The Bible Society and full details can be found here. If you’d like to join us you are welcome to come along any Tuesday evening at 7:30.

Victory Coffee Morning
On VE Day – Thursday 8th May – we had our usual coffee morning and lunch but it had a distinctly wartime flavour, with all the old ration-book favourites like spam, beef paste and blancmange, as well as some delicious and very fresh cakes. Not only did we have food & drink on offer but a grand old sing-song courtesy of Alan Percival was enjoyed by everybody. Here are some photos of the day.

VE Day Celebration
To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) we will be having a special coffee morning this week with a specially selected menu of food from yesteryear, reminiscences to make us smile and of course, plenty of flags! Come along and share your memories… or learn about the great day from those who were there at the time. Thursday 8th May from 10 o’clock onwards in our Sunday School room at the church.

Our Easter services
Easter week is here again, a little later than usual. Easter is the most central celebration of the Christian calendar, and the most important event in the Christian faith. Our Easter services this year will start on Palm Sunday, 13th April, when we will have an evening service (starting at 6:00am) which will be lead by Stuart Hunter. On Good Friday morning – 18th April – we will have a special commemorative service – this service will start at 10:45am and will include the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Then on Easter Day – Sunday 20th April – we will have two services. In the morning (starting at 10:45am) the speaker will be Lester Atherton and in the evening Roy Delooze will lead us in worship from 6:00pm. Refreshments will be served after the services on Easter Sunday evening.

A Springtime Surprise
This weekend we had a bit of a tidy up. The grounds were cleared of weeds, shrubs were pruned and paintwork was spruced up. Indoors a storage cupboard was sorted and amongst the contents were some documents of some considerable age that help to shed some light on our church’s history. They are an unexpected treasure trove – in some cases with links to families that are still associated with our church today. Those documents will be properly conserved and will be shared on this website at some time in the future. But for now, here’s a photo, taken just this evening, of a glorious floral display on our alter for this evening’s service. A reminder of the simple, God-given beauties all around us.

Crafty like a Sunday morning
We have a brilliant kids’ craft session on one Sunday each month and those are open to all pre-school and Primary aged children (0-11). We might be painting, sewing, baking, building… you name it, we’ll try it. It’s a great way to learn about the Bible and is hugely enjoyed by the children of our church. The Bible Craft sessions start at 10:45 on the following Sundays: 9th February, 9th March, 6th April, 4th May, 1st June, 29th June and 13th July.

Warm Space and a warm welcome
Each Thursday from 10:00am we open our doors for a free coffee morning followed by a free lunch. It is open to absolutely anyone and with the weather so cold and the days so short at this time of year, a warm welcome goes a long way. We’d love to see you so if you’d like a bit of company, please come along.

Coffee And Carols
On Thursday 19th December our coffee morning regulars were treated to a fantastic carol concert courtesy of the pupils and staff of the Deanery High School from Wigan. With solos, choir pieces and communal singing, as well as contributions from some of our church members, the service, lead by Lester Atherton was a fantastic celebration. Once the service was over the attendees went for a Christmas lunch together as well. A day to remember!

Christmas Services
As we approach the festive season we will have a range of fantastic services for you to attend. The first is on Thursday 19th December when our regular coffee morning (from 10:00 onwards) will include a short carol service – so please come along to share a brew, a mince pie and a sing-song.
On Sunday 22nd December we will have our two main carol services. The Family Carol Service will be in the morning at 10:45am, including a short Nativity from the children, and this service will be lead by Chris Mayes.
In the evening of the 22nd we will have our famous Candlelit Carol Service. This will start at 6:00pm and James Tobiasen will be in the pulpit. Refreshments will be served after the service and of course, all are welcome, young, old and everyone in between, to celebrate the birth of our Saviour.
The final event to tell you about is the Christmas Praise service on Christmas morning itself. This is an open service where anyone can contribute. It starts at 10:00.

Christmas Fayre
On Saturday 30th November we will be holding our Christmas Fayre. It will be open from 2:00pm until 4:00pm. There will be seasonal refreshments as well as stalls selling cakes, decorations, Christmas crafts and much more. So please come along and support this great event, treat yourself to a mince pie & a cuppa and help to generate some much needed church funds. We look forward to seeing you there.

More Eye-witness accounts: Sunday School Memories
In our ongoing series of articles written by members and friends of our church, we have a new contribution – this time sharing memories of attendance at the Sunday School during the 1960s and 70s. What do you remember? Follow the link here to read more.

Harvest – photographs
On Sunday 6th October we celebrated our Harvest festival with two services and the church looked absolutely wonderful. Enormous thanks to everyone who gave donations towards the display or who helped decorate the church in some way. The fresh produce was distributed amongst the congregation and the tinned, packeted and long-life goods were donated to the Warrington Foodbank. Here’s a selection of some of the amazing gifts and creativity.

Our schedule of Sunday services for the remainder of this year is now more or less complete and can be found here. As well as the speakers who will lead each service, there are also indicators of when we will have a communion service, when we will serve refreshments after the service and the dates of our Bible Craft session are also included. Please check them all and update your diary – especially for those special services around Harvest & Christmas time.

Padgate Walking Day Update
With many thanks to the efforts of a number of people – but especially Father Dave Heywood of St.Oswalds and Councillor Sue Emery – it now looks like Padgate Walking Day will go ahead after all. Detailed plans are yet to be confirmed but we await more information and will provide updates as soon as they become available.
Padgate Walking Day Announcement
Padgate & Woolston Walking Day is organised by Churches Together in East Warrington.
At the end of April, we became aware of several problems concerning this year’s Walking
Day. Consequently, an emergency meeting was convened on 22 May 2024 to discuss
these matters. Representatives from all the churches and schools that take part in
Walking Day, together with some local councillors, were invited to attend.
At the meeting, the following issues were raised:
1) Management and Organisation
The preparation for Walking Day begins in January each year. This includes putting
together a management plan, risk assessment, insurance and guidance for participating
parties. Each year, despite appeals for help, too much is left to too few. Although we have
managed until now, this year the problem has become acute, especially when trying to
meet the threshold for safety for a public event.
2) Volunteer Marshals
We need far more marshals (at least 40 this year), but every year when we appeal through
our churches and schools, few come forward and they are often church members in their
seventies and older. This means we are looking for people to help on the day to make up
numbers. This is no longer practical or safe. Marshals need to be named, briefed, and
organised in good time before the event. Furthermore, it was noted that volunteer
marshals have no authority and are increasingly met with abusive behaviour.
3) Safeguarding
Some primary schools raised issues that are deeply concerning about the safety of
children. These include the number of people that gather outside St Oswald’s and ‘fall’
into the procession, the behaviour of some when asked to remain on the pavement, car
owners challenging volunteer marshals and removing cones at road closures, vehicles
putting children at risk at Padgate Community Centre and other assembly points,
‘abusive’ behaviour from patrons of a local pub, and so on. With four weeks to go – two
of which are half-term – we simply cannot sort these issues out with confidence.
4) Finance
The costs of Walking Day have for the most part been met by the local churches.
However, these costs are increasing each year, and the churches can no longer fund the
rising costs on their own.
The meeting lasted two-and-a-half hours as we explored and tried to find a practical
resolution to each problem. However, with four weeks to go, we were unable to reach a
consensus that we could stage Walking Day safely this year. Therefore, it was decided – reluctantly, but in the best interests of the children of our schools as well as the volunteer marshals – that we should not go ahead with Walking Day this year.
It was also decided that we should set up a Management Team in September to attempt
to resolves these issues and plan for Padgate & Woolston Walking Day in 2025.
Our Bible Study resumes this week
Last year we started on a course of Bible study based on the course Grow Your Life With Christ and now we are past our Winter break we will resume on Tuesday 16th April at 7:30pm. The remaining parts of the course will cover the following topics: Prayer, Obedience and Evangelism. We will spend two weeks on each of them so the course should run for six weks. It’d be great if you can join us – we look forward to seeing you.

Sunday School Prizegiving
On Sunday 31st March we had our annual prizegiving for the children of our Boomerang club (i.e. our Sunday School). This annual event recognises the regular attendance of the children at the church and this year we had five children receiving books, and in the photograph below you can see them all – left to right is Iris Kershaw, Paige Stafford, Yovela Poon, Noah Poon and Cole Kershaw. The Boomerang club meets whenever there is a Sunday morning service and the children get involved in call kinds of activities – games, crafts, painting, baking, stories, music… you name it!

Easter Week – 24th to 31st March
Easter comes early this year so please don’t leave it too late to join us in celebrating this, the most central event of the Christian calendar, and the most important event of the Christian faith. Our Easter services this year will start on Palm Sunday, 24th March, when we will have a morning service (starting at 10:45am) which will be lead by Ray Peers. On Good Friday morning – 29th March we will have a special commemorative service – this service will start at 10:45am and will include the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. And then on Easter Day – Sunday 31st – we will have two services. In the morning (starting at 10:45am) the speaker will be Lester Atherton and in the evening Stuart Hunter will lead us in worship from 6:00pm. Refreshments will be served after the services on Palm Sunday morning and Easter Sunday evening.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity – January 18th to 25th 2024
Each year there is a week of prayer for Christian unity. This year the focus for the week is on the text ‘You shall love the Lord your God… and your neighbour as yourself’ with a particular focus on the parable of the Good Samaritan. Our own church will be hosting an evening of prayer in which many of the churches from east Warrington will participate. That will be on Wednesday 24th January and the meeting will start at 7:00pm. We would love to welcome you in on that evening as we share in fellowship with our other local churches. More detail can be found here

Our Latest Updates for 2022

Our published schedule of Sunday services is now fully active and we are delighted that our Sunday School has re-opened, our prayer meeting takes place every Wednesday and our regular FREE coffee morning is running each week. Full details of all of our planned activities can be found in the What’s On page of this site. Sunday School – The Boomerang Club 2022
Our Sunday School – which we call Boomerang – is now fully open again and runs every week that we have a Sunday morning service. Boomerang is open to all pre-school and primary aged children and features crafts, games, music, Bible stories and – sometimes – snacks! And to put your mind at rest, all of the supervisors are DBS checked. For the full schedule of Sunday morning services please check our What’s On page.
Christmas Services 2021
In December of last year we held our traditional Candle-lit Carol Service. and Christmas Morning Praise services. These are ever popular and with carols sung and Christmas readings, all in the amazingly atmospheric candle-lit chapel, complete with Christmas tree, window decorations and holly and ivy in abundance, we really celebrated the birth of our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. After the candle-lit service we had refreshments which were enjoyed by all of the congregation.
Harvest Festival 2021
On October 3rd we held our Harvest Thanksgiving service and our church looked resplendent with the produce that was brought in. The main harvest display was really splendid and we had a record number of tinned, packaged and dried goods donated which were all passed on to Warrington Foodbank.
In addition each window in the church was decorated with a harvest theme. Photos of all of the displays and windows are shown in our Gallery number 3,

Our Covid guidelines and precautions 2021
In order to protect all visitors to our church we have been following government and public health guidelines wherever possible and we continue to do so. But from the end of March 2022 we are lifting some of our own controls. We will no longer require social distancing, the one-way system will be removed, and the mandatory wearing of masks and contact tracing will no longer be necessary. However we will be very happy to welcome anyone who would prefer to wear a mask and we will continue to provide hand sanitiser and masks in the entrance areas for anyone who might want them. We are also restoring the hymn books and pew Bibles to their rightful places throughout the church. Finally, the NHS Covid app Q code will remain available for anyone who might want to use it.
Christenings, Weddings and Funerals
We recognise that for many people, contact with the church is often linked with the best moments in life… or the worst. Christenings and weddings are the most joyful of occasions and of course funerals mark a sad and difficult moment in every family’s life. Whatever ‘life event’ you are planning or are having to deal with, we can support you and would be privileged to be part of your day. Please contact us using the details supplied on the ‘About Us’ page of this website if we can be of any help.
